Accreditation for Officials
Recorder training sessions Thursday 5 November. Anyone interested in this or any other positions?
Recorder Training
Joan Kellet will be running a training session for people interested in becoming accredited as recorder. For those new to swimming, the recorders are the people who sit near the computer operator and check and collate all the results.
Where and When
The session will be held on the mezzanine level at the AIS Aquatic Centre (just outside the gym) starting at 7.30pm on Thursday 5 November 2009.
RSVP
Please let Jenny Dunstan know as soon as possible if you are interested in this session. High school students are able to obtain accreditation too.
Read on for information about other accredited positions and also the process for accreditation.
Other positions
There are also a number of other accredited positions which are critical to the running of a swimming meet, eg
- marshall - the person who organises the swimmers as they report to the marshalling area before their race
- checkstarter - just before the start of the race the marshall hands the swimmers over to check starter who places them behind the blocks, making sure that they are in the correct lane
- starter
- timekeeper
- announcer
- AOE and computer operator - works the computer and electronic equipment.
If we have a good supply of our own officials so we can conduct our own meets and club nights - without having to rely on other clubs too much - and what better way to support your kids swimming. High school students are able to obtain accreditation too.
If you are interested in accreditation in any of these positions please contact
Jenny Dunstan by email and let her know.
Process
The process of obtaining accreditation is as follows:
Download the Swimming NSW technical official training notes and exercises from the Swimming NSW website www.nswswimming.com.au . [Go to Resources, Technical and scroll right down and click of the training notes and exercises for the position you are interested in. Notes for marshalls are included in the checkstarter notes.]
- Read the notes and complete the training exercises.
- Attend a session with a course presenter who will give you the Swimming Australia Learner Guide and take you through it.
- Complete the written assessment tasks in the SAL Learner Guide and undertake practical training at a meet or club night, as advised by the presenter.
- When you are ready, an assessor will assess you in a practical officiating environment, probably at a club meet or at club night. You will be assessed as ‘competent’ or ‘not yet competent’ against a a list of criteria necessary to be competent in that technical official position. The criteria are in the SAL Learner Guide.
- If you are assessed as competent, you do not have to wait for notification from SAL before you can perform duties as an accredited official for the position you were assessed for.
There is no longer a need to do a written exam, except for level 2 referee candidates.
